The First Thanksgiving
The Pilgrims came to America from England on a big ship called the Mayflower in search of religious freedom. They landed at a place called Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. They had a very hard journey, yet when they landed they prayed to God and thanked Him for safety. Their first Winter in America, the Pilgrims suffered with illness and lack of food. When Spring came, they began to plant food. One day, the Native Americans, sometimes called American Indians, came to visit the Pilgrims. One American Indian named Squanto stayed with the Pilgrims and taught them how to plant, hunt, and fish. The Pilgrims invited their Native American friends to a great feast to celebrate the harvest and God's blessings. For three days, they ate turkey, corn, beans, pumpkins, squash, and other foods and thanked God for their families, friends, food, and homes. Today, many Americans continue this tradition by having a big feast with family and friends on the last Thursday of November each year and thanking God for His blessings in the previous year.
