.. Reading to my children played the biggest role in teaching them their ABC’s. When I had my first son, Brannon, I started reading to him right away. I would read nursery rhymes while I nursed him at night. As he got older, I brought out a set of “Alphabet I Spy” books and we spent lots of time just pointing out his ABC’s. When Daryl and Evan came along, they enjoyed listening to the stories and began to point out letters in the books too. I noticed that the boy’s vocabulary was growing so quickly just from reading to them. But I hadn’t really sat down and showed the boys how to write the letters. Brannon was about four years old when he started asking me how I knew what the books said. We began practicing how to write the letters and what sounds they make. Daryl wanted to follow his brother and tried to write his ABC’s too! Evan was a little too young and not really interested yet. But he still loved reading with Mommy! When we found out that we were moving to Japan, I began really working on teaching the boys Japanese. I quizzed them on Hiragana and taught them their numbers, and colors in Japanese. I just completely dropped the ABC’s. Even though I continued to read English books to them every day, they forgot a lot of their letters. When we got settled in Japan, I realized the mistake I had made and began reviewing the alphabet with Brannon and Daryl. Every night we practiced the ABC’s ? how to write them and how to read them. My youngest began showing an interest in learning, too. Now, all three enjoy practicing their ABC’s. They like playing “I Spy” ? a game where we get out a book and everyone takes turns looking for the different letters of the alphabet. We also play “I spy something beginning with…” and then fill in a different letter each time. This teaches that the letters have a meaning. They form words. It’s the beginning of learning how to read. And that’s really where learning the ABC’s began for my sons ? just from reading with Mommy.

"New Year's Resolution
Many American's make a New Year's Resolution at the beginning of a new year.
Because of the new year, people feel a determination to make a commitment to do something different. The definition of New Year's Resolution is: any decision to
begin or end something, as a habit, at the beginning of a new year.
This could be a decision involving health,
such as a diet or exercise program. It could be a
resolution to save money, or spend more time with
family. Some people write their resolutions or goals
on paper and put them in a sealed envelope to open at the
end of the year to see their progress. New Year's
Resolutions offer many possibilities to anyone wanting to
make a change for the new year..
